Going Postal

This morning Christina took Otis outside and noticed our mailbox was messed up. She came back inside to tell me she thought some teenagers had hit it with a baseball bat. Her basic order was for me to go look at it and "fix it".

Below is what I encountered:

Here is a picture of the first thing I saw as I approached the mailbox. To be honest I was expecting more damage after the way Christina had described it to me. I thought that whoever did this could have been a little more destructive.

Christina told me that she was unable to get the lid to stay closed and now I could see why. I knew this mailbox was secured but still dumbfounded how someone driving by in a car with a baseball bat could not have taken the mailbox completely off.

And then I noticed something strange, at the very bottom of the mailbox (just past the second screw from the left) there was a hint of blood. I quickly glanced up and down the street and noticed we were the only ones victimized by this mailbox assault. I was really confused. If teenagers did this, why didn't they smash up other's mailboxes? Why was there a small trace of blood? How do we have such bad luck with our mailbox?

Later in the morning we decided to go to Cover's Apple Ranch. As we passed through the rest of the neighborhood, we began to notice that we were not the only ones who had their mailbox smashed. About five or six others, on our side of the street only, had also been hit and the very last house had their entire mailbox and post laying on the ground.

As we returned home, the person whose mailbox was on the ground was talking with another neighbor so I rolled down my window to talk with them. I then noticed there was a good amount of blood on their mailbox. Come to find out, some guy got drunk and was walking through the neighborhood punching random mailboxes. By the time he got to the end of our street he had a trail of blood left in his destructive path and was finally picked up by the sheriff department.

I am now stuck with replacing a mailbox for the second time in six months.
